RETURN OF THE INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR NEW CÉGEP DE LA GASPÉSIE ET DES ÎLES

Gaspé, November 30, 2011. – In 2012, for a third consecutive year, the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles is making a bursary program available to students enrolling in the fall term. If they meet the criteria, students from within the region may be eligible for $1,500 bursaries while those from outside the region have access to $5,000 bursaries. The bursaries for students from outside the region are offered by CRÉ and the Commission jeunesse de la Gaspésie et des Îles.

Via these bursaries, the region will offer a total amount of $200,000 to new students. To be eligible, future students have to enrol, before March 1, 2012, in a DCS or a DVS at a Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles campus and complete the application form on the College website. Information about other program-based criteria is also provided on the website.

This initiative by the region and the College is designed not only to encourage young people to remain in the region but also to attract students from elsewhere. A study conducted by CIRADD at the end of the first year of the incentive program showed that it influenced 20% of the respondents to some extent.

Last year, 82 regional bursaries and 9 extra-regional bursaries were awarded.

Promotion of the incentive program to young people is already underway, and it will continue with the parents and general public being contacted by March 1.
