THE CORNÉLIUS-BROTHERTON FOUNDATION FUNDS PROJECTS FOR STUDENTS

Gaspé, January 30, 2012. – In response to a call for projects issued last fall, the Cornélius Brotherton Foundation announces that it is providing $30,000 in funding for 17 college projects. This financial aid will serve to support initiatives in two distinct categories: innovation in programs of study and the development of student life at each Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles campus.

In the Innovation in programs of study category, three projects have been selected:

At the Carleton-sur-Mer campus:

The Arts, Literature and Media department will receive $500 to publish a collection of poetry and short stories written by the students.

At the Gaspé campus:

An exploratory mission to develop a fine crafts school will receive $500 in funding.

At the Magdalen Islands campus:

The students enrolled in Natural Science will receive $1,100; the money will be used to allow them to go and present their chemistry and biology work at UQAR’s popular science symposium.

In the Student Life Development category, 14 projects were selected:

At the Carleton-sur-Mer campus

Two proposals for international internships caught the committee’s attention:

Twelve Social Science students will take part in a research and eco-volunteering experience in Peru for which they will receive $3,000 in funding; ten other students, enrolled in the Arts, Literature and Media program will receive $2,500 so they can participate in a cultural internship in Paris.

At the École des pêches et de l’aquaculture du Québec:

Eight students in the Aquaculture program will be able to count on $4,000 in financial support to visit some hatcheries in France.

At the Gaspé campus:

Nine projects will receive funding:

In the literary field, a $500 grant will allow students to participate in the Prix littéraire collégien competition while $500 will be granted to support the Passage project, which aims to promote literature within the College.

In the area of artistic endeavours, $500 will be granted to support student participation in the first edition of the Prix collégial du cinéma québécois; the committee responsible for setting up the brand new student radio station will receive $2,000. In addition, the improvisation team, Le péché collégial, will be receiving a $1,100 grant to finance training.

Internships still being just as popular, a first $2,250 project will give nine Adventure Tourism students the chance to work abroad. As for the Arts, Literature and Media students, they will receive a $1,500 grant to take part in a Commedia Dell’arte internship in Italy.

Finally, the Gaspé Peninsula Science Centre will receive a $3,000 grant so it can promote scientific culture while the students participating in Study-space Day at the annual meeting of the Ordre des infirmières et des infirmiers du Québec will share $500.

At the Magdalen Islands campus:

An amount of $5,500 will be granted for the Amarres et voilure project.

At all campuses:

A $1,000 grant will make it easier for some fifteen students to participate in the international science and society forum organised by the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).

The Cornélius Brotherton is delighted to provide financial support for these projects which will make the lives of Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles students more dynamic. Not only does this initiative make it possible to offer a greater number of educational, sport and cultural activities, it also serves to diversify the activities currently available by broadening the range of opportunities.

Banking on the financial commitment of donors throughout the 2007-2012 fundraising campaign, the Cornélius Brotherton Foundation hopes to raise more than $1,250,000 over a period of five years. The money collected, a large portion of which will be capitalised, serves to fund a large-scale redistribution program.  The support funds for the development of student life and for innovation in programs of study are elements of this campaign.
