Immersion
Did you know that the Gaspé campus of the CÉGEP de la Gaspésie houses both an English section and a French section? Students from both sectors can choose the level of immersion that they are comfortable with, by straddling the two sectors as they work through their DECs.
For example, an English student can do a DEC in Social Work in the French sector, but take all the obligatory courses, such as English Literature, Humanities and Physical Education, in English. The best of both worlds!
Industrial Maintenance students study their first year in English and their second and third years in French. This prepares them for the workplace in Quebec.
Science students from the French sector often take chemistry, physics and math with the smaller groups in the English sector, often improving their côte R.

J'ai fait une partie de mes études en Sciences de la nature au Cégep de Gaspé. J'ai suivi une partie des cours de sciences et un cours d'éducation physique à la section anglaise du cégep. Cette immersion partielle a été pour moi très profitable. L'bjectif principal que je visais en suivant des cours dans une langue seconde était d'améliorer mon anglais. Je suis très content, le fait de suivre mes cours de chimie et certains cours de mathématiques en anglais a vraiment aidé à améliorer ma compréhension de l'anglais oral et ma facilité à écrire dans cette langue. C'est intéressant et très formateur d'être dans un vrai contexte anglais et pas seulement dans un cours d'anglais avec seulement d'autres francophones. J'encourage tout le monde à faire ce saut vers une immersion partielle parce que c'est un saut qui se fait bien et qui rapporte beaucoup du point de vue de la formation. Pour moi, cette immersion m'a permis de prendre de l'assurance et de réaliser qu'il est possible d'étudier dans une autre langue. Je suis maintenant étudiant au baccalauréat en génie informatique à l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. Je fais cette année un échange en Espagne où j'y étudie un an en espagnol. Je ne suis pas sûr que j'aurais voulu faire ce saut sans avoir déjà étudier un peu dans une langue seconde.
Joshua Miller Harvard University The two years I spent at the Cegep de la Gaspesie et des Iles were very special to me. They provided a great transition from high school to University. I entered Harvard with a very strong work ethic and sense of time management; many of my peers are still struggling to develop these important skills. My Cegep years provided me with more than sufficient academic background, such that I am familiar with a lot of the material that I am presently studying in my freshman year. Given the small student population at the Cegep de la Gaspesie et des Iles, I found it easier to become more involved and play a more significant role in many extracurricular activities, including student government and intramural sports. It is easier to get lost and feel less able to make a contribution in larger institutions. Due to the very small class sizes (some which were less than 10 students), the professors can devote lots of individual attention to each student, and offer more than sufficient office hours to ensure that no student (who seeks extra help) is left behind. I established very personal relationships with many of my Gaspe professors, and even now, while in University, they still welcome my emails and questions, and never refuse to lend a helping hand. At the Cegep de la Gaspesie et des Iles, if one has the right attitude and seeks help when necessary, the notion of never understanding something does not exist. I wish to thank my former college for the opportunity to share these thoughts with future prospective students.
Audrey Perry Melançon J'avais beaucoup entendu parler d'étudiants francophones suivant des cours de sciences en anglais et j'ai voulu moi aussi relever le défi. J'apprécie vraiment le fait que les professeurs comprennent que nous travaillons avec notre langue seconde et qu'ils nous aident à l'améliorer grâce à des reformulations ou à des remarques constructives relatives à nos travaux. Je tiens à encourager d'autres jeunes à faire comme moi parce que c'est une excellente opportunité sur les plans social et linguistique.
Clara Boisclair-Boussard Grâce au Cegep de Gaspé, j'ai eu la merveilleuse opportunité de suivre mon cours en Tourisme d'aventure en anglais. Étant dans un pays où deux langues sont officielles, le bilinguisme est de mise. La technique me permet de parfaire mon anglais et ainsi m'ouvre beaucoup plus de débouchés d'emploi tant au pays qu'à l'internationale. D'ailleurs, dès cet été, la possibilité d'un emploi dans l'ouest canadien s'offre à moi. L'immersion que je vis présentement me permet d'aller travailler dans mon domaine en Alberta, tout en continuant d'améliorer et même de perfectionner ma seconde langue.
Francis Gendron Pour être honnête, lorsque j'ai appliqué, je ne savais même pas que ce cours existait en anglais. Lorsqu'ils m'ont averti que j'avais l'opportunité de faire mes cours en anglais, j'ai tout de suite accepté l'offre puisque je savais qu'il est très important de savoir parler plus d'une langue, spécialement en Tourisme d'aventure. Finalement, je suis très content de la décision que j'ai prise, j'adore mon expérience et j'ai pu travailler l'an passé dans une entreprise anglophone de l'Alberta. If you have the opportunity to study in a second language, do it. Maybe the first weeks are harder but then it is so much better for you personnaly and professionnaly.
Jason Synnott The Cegep de la Gaspésie et des Îles offers the opportunity to follow classes in both official languages. I encourage anybody who wishes to master a second language to take advantage of this opportunity. I enjoyed the fact that the class sizes were smaller for the English section. Friends and colleagues encouraged me to apply for the immersion opportunity. The teachers fully understand the French students and do not hesitate to help them. |
